An Elevator Pitch – What exactly is it? Why is having one so important? What can a great elevator pitch do? How do I craft the perfect pitch? We answer all of these questions and more + give you a template to work from when crafting your very own pitch!

Our world is fast-paced, and first impressions matter more now than ever before. Research shows that people form a first impression of someone within the first few seconds of meeting them. In fact, a study published in Psychological Science found that people can form an impression of someone’s trustworthiness in just a tenth of a second. Phew, that’s not much time!

Networking events, job interviews, casual conversations, blind dates, you name it, you only have a few seconds to make a memorable impression. Now, this is where having that perfect elevator pitch in your back pocket comes in handy. Let’s elevate yours!

What exactly is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch is a short, concise statement that summarizes who you are, what you do, and what you can offer others. The term “elevator pitch” comes from the idea that you should be able to deliver your pitch in the time it takes to ride an elevator with someone – usually about 30 seconds.

Why is having a good elevator pitch so important?

For one thing, it can help you stand out in a crowded market. Whether you’re looking for a job, promoting your business, or trying to land that big account, hundreds or thousands of other people are likely doing this same thing. Well-crafted elevator pitches allow you to differentiate yourself and make a memorable impression.

What can a good elevator pitch do?

A good elevator pitch helps you feel more confident and prepared. Walking into a networking event, job interview, or client presentation can be nerve-wracking, but having a clear and concise pitch can help you feel more in control and focused. It can also help you stay on track and avoid rambling.

What should I be mindful of when crafting my elevator pitch?

1.   Know your audience and define your audience based on demographics, interests, needs, etc.

2.   Keep in mind the pain points that your audience could be facing and propose your solution so that it can help solve them.

3.   Don’t forget why you and your solution/product/service is unique and what sets you apart from the competition.

4.   Short, sweet, and to the point is a must – remember 30 seconds or less!

5.   Practice, practice, practice – your pitch should sound natural and effortless.

Remember, the goal of an elevator pitch is to grab your audience’s attention, make them interested in what you offer, and leave them wanting to know more. Following these steps, you can craft a compelling elevator pitch to help you stand out from the competition and win over potential customers. Go forth and concur!

Here’s a template to get you started – Be creative, make this your own, and keep in mind what you just learned!
